as I sat typing away, I found myself drawn to the position of the polar bear and the impact that global warming is destroying their environment and how they can quickly die out. thought that made me stop what I am doing and sit down for a moment and think about what he said. I could not imagine a world without the Polar Bears. I could not imagine a world without a North Pole and the Arctic. It made me re-evaluate the dire consequences of our daily actions. It made me think about the whole "Going Green" movement.
Every where you look these days you'll see "green" products and "green" programming. There are "Green" cookbooks, "Green " clothing, and even "green" pet products. I even saw a "green" toys for children. But what does it mean to be "Green "?
Going "Green" for most people it means to be more environmentally responsible and create a better, healthier choices for themselves, their families and our environment.
Some may fear that they have to make drastic changes in your lifestyle in order to "green". Others might see this as just a fad or passing trend. terminology can be a passing fad, but the whole concept is more socially responsible and making better choices is here to stay.
There are many small things you can do to impact on our environment. Maybe not individually, but as society at large and the small things add up to big changes.
Here are a few things you can do today that will make a difference in our environment when the combined efforts and millions of other people just like you.
- Turn off unused electronics and appliances when not in use. Did you know that even when not in use these items continue to draw electricity? Some of the worst offenders are automatic coffee pots, microwaves, TV and clock radio.
- These days, when gasoline prices reached an all time high it makes better sense, both for our environment and your pocket, to walk or car pool whenever possible. I'll be the first to say the idea of walking a mile or two down the road to get the stamps do not thrill me much, but even just walking to the bus station instead of driving makes a difference. Another great tip is to not let the car idle. If you are stopped for more than a minute or two to turn your car off. Just idling wastes gas and pollutes our environment.
- use reusable water bottles. I know it's very easy to grab a nice bottle of cold water at any deli or handsome, but each of those bottles end up in our landfills. Each year tons of water bottles end up in our landfills. You also need to consider all the forces and the pollutants that are used to create a bottle with water and fuel that is required to be delivered to all stores. much healthier and cheaper option would be water from their kitchen faucets. If you happen to have water that is not very tasty, you can always get one of those affordable water filtration systems like Brita and Pur. You can buy inexpensive reusable water bottle just about anywhere these days.
- Reduce waste wherever possible. Instead of taking a plastic spoon to eat his lunch with a tablespoon of regular use of home and wash it when you're done. Use the boxes instead of sandwich bags. You can even buy a reusable sandwich wraps. Make your own snacks such as pudding, and put it in a reusable container instead of buying pudding cups from the store. It's cheaper and saves our environment.
- Buy locally grown and produced products. Support your local farmers and farmer's markets. When you buy locally to save our environment from all the fuel that is used mostly to transport food from one area to another. Granted you can not buy every product locally, but you can find the vast majority of fruits and vegetables from local farms. They cost less than traditional shops too. It is also important to support local shops.
- Join a local yahoo group. Instead of throwing to an unwanted bike or golf clubs that they no longer use them on a list Freeshare / Freecycle them along to someone who can use them. It helps to keep more items from our landfills. You can also get something they are looking too much for free.
- Eat less meat. Even eating one meatless meal a week can make a big impact on our environment (not to mention that it is a healthier choice for you). Did you know that 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock? It's more than that emitted from the different modes. Another advantage for our environment is less meat require less trees are destroyed. Every year thousands of hectares of land in the Amazon were deforested to make room for cattle. Millions of trees are destroyed each year, and as you know trees help to clean our air.
These are just some ideas to get you started on the path to be more socially conscious and environmentally aware of what you can do to help save our environment. As a bonus you'll even save some money too.
"Going Green" is something everyone can do. All it takes is saying that doing an ecological act, and continue to do that on a daily basis.
We have only one Earth. We must all do our part to make the obligation to take care of our Earth before it's too late. Even the smallest action can have a big impact. Making an effort to "green" thing today.
