Do not hesitate to invite friends because your house is a mess? Do you cringe when you look at the interior of your car, purse or storage? Do you have a wardrobe closet, or to attack when you open it? Can it be easy to find things in your home and office? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, perhaps it is time to think about spring cleaning.
First, let me set the record straight, I'm no Martha Stewart when it comes to household. In the spring, especially, I'd rather be gardening. But I've learned that just as we clear away the leaves and prune the dead wood from plants and shrubs to encourage new growth, cleansing and clearing clutter from our homes is an effective way to release energy and make room for new possibilities in our lives. So this year I have been weeding out clutter, cleaning and organizing closets, cupboards and drawers and it feels great.
Clearing clutter is an exercise in letting go. Cleaning and cleaning is difficult, but it can be energizing at the same time. Dirt and clutter and distract us bog down. Getting rid of it creates a feeling of lightness and airiness. Paring down to basics is a movement towards simplicity. There is aa sense of peace and serenity that comes from renewal to our environment . Besides cleaning, we create space. Nature abhors a vacuum, so as to create space in our physical environment, we pave the way for new things that come our way. That does not mean that now is an empty physical space must necessarily be filled by another object. Instead, a new opportunity in a completely different area of our lives could be drawn for us. It sounds pretty hokey pokey, but I've seen too many examples with your customers and your life to believe otherwise. I do not think it's coincidence that my client has landed an interview after the overhaul of his apartment, that two new clients appear after I clean my pantry, or that another client's request for a summer off has been approved after she organized a loft.
Here are 10 Spring Cleaning Tips to get you going:
1 When in doubt, throw it. If you have not worn or used for something in the last 6-12 months you obviously have done pretty well without him. If you have a pack rat tendencies (which I admit, I do-everything seems to have a potential art project) box up the things in question. If you do not use them in the next 3-6 months, toss them. You'll never miss them when they're gone.
2 File Pile-If I am feeling overwhelmed, or unfocused, one of the quickest ways for me to feel in the middle of it again to get rid of the mail pile that builds up on my kitchen island. If you're feeling scattered on the job, file papers away and clear your desk in order to regain clarity.
3 Shrink-Once you start creating space, not fill it with more unnecessary stuff. To mail pile out of the building back up, go on, and then select the campaign for independence from junk mail that will generate a letter to get your name from mailing lists. Think twice before buying. Take advantage of your local library. You can borrow books, video, DVD, CD, CD-ROMs, and in some cities, even pictures.
4 Reuse-pass outgrown clothes and toys for relatives or friends. You'll feel good about getting rid of your stuff, and they will be happy with a hand-me-downs. Local charities, shelters, food pantry, and usually welcome donations. It can also be converted into a profitable experience brings the items have a consignment store or yard sale.
5 Recycle-Are you a collector box or magazine and catalog hoarder? There is no need to store product boxes outside their warranty period. Cartons, cereal boxes and magazines can all be recycled. Put them out with your curbside recycling or take them to the dump.
6 Have a place for everything and train themselves and family members to put everything in its place. If organizing is not your forte, consider hiring a personal organizer. The website for the National Association of Professional Organizers is.
7 Read up on it. If you are a person who loves to explore a new venture before you jump into it, then you're in luck because there are many good books on the subject. I highly recommend: Clear Your Mess with Feng Shui, Karen Kingston Speed Cleaning Disorder Control byJeff Campbell, Jeff Campbell Organizing from the inside out, by Julie Morgenstern
8 Make the investment. Spring for some floors, shelves for your pantry, double your closet rod, or whatever it takes to get items organized and easily accessible.
9 Schedule regular purgings. My kids have learned that in order to make room for a new birthday and Christmas gifts that they need to part with some of his old toys. Just as children outgrow their toys, to adults outgrow their stuff as well. Especially if you grow through personal development or coaching job, be sure to update your surroundings to reflect who you are all not where you were.
10 Reward yourself for all your hard work. Treat yourself to a take-out dinner. Sit back and enjoy a normal environment. Put your feet up and relax with a good novel or take a nice long bath.
There are many ways to start spring cleaning. One technique is to set the timer for fifteen minutes a day and as much as you can in that moment. If you can devote an entire day or afternoon in the project, obviously we'll cover more ground. You might want to start with areas that bugged you the most. Sometimes it helps to tackle the fastest and easiest of tasks to help build some momentum. Regardless of the pace and the strategy you choose, you're bound to enjoy immediately visible results, and new things attract you.
